How to share the Marriott Explore Rate with family members

Updated August 24, 2026

One of the best parts of working for Marriott is that the Explore Rate does not stop with you. Immediate family gets the same deep MMP discount, and friends can use the MMF rate. Here is who qualifies, how sponsorship works now, and what your family needs to know to actually book.

Who counts as immediate family for MMP

MMP eligibility is defined by relationship, not by surname: spouse or domestic partner, children, parents, in-laws, and siblings all qualify as immediate family. A sibling or parent with a different last name qualifies exactly the same way, because what matters is the sponsored link, not the name.

Everyone outside that list, including cousins, friends, and coworkers, is MMF territory: still a useful discount, usually shallower than MMP.

Sponsoring family is digital and one-time now

Before 2026, associates generated a paper authorization form for each family trip. Since the relaunch, the associate links the family member's own Marriott Bonvoy account to the Explore program once. From then on, that person's account carries verified special-rate status, and they book on Marriott.com themselves with no paperwork at check-in.

This means every traveler needs their own Bonvoy account, and the name on the reservation simply needs to match their own profile. The full details of the new system are in our 2026 changes guide.

Family members earn their own points

Explore Rate stays earn Marriott Bonvoy points and elite night credits on the account of the person staying. So a parent or sibling using the rate regularly builds their own status along the way, on top of the discount itself.

What to tell your family about actually finding the rate

The most common frustration for newly verified family members is searching a dream hotel and seeing nothing. That is normal: each hotel opens Explore inventory night by night, and popular properties open it in short-lived pockets. The habits that work are the same ones associates learn: use the monthly calendar view, stay flexible on dates, expect entry-level rooms, and book immediately when the rate appears, since most bookings can be cancelled later.

If your family would rather not learn the refresh routine, ExploreDrop watches the MMP rate at chosen hotels and sends an email when it drops below a target price. They still book directly on Marriott.com with their verified account.

Common questions

Which family members qualify for the Marriott MMP rate?

Immediate family: spouse or domestic partner, children, parents, in-laws, and siblings. Friends and extended family can use the MMF rate instead.

My family member has a different last name. Do they still qualify?

Yes. Eligibility is based on the relationship, not the surname. The associate links their Bonvoy account digitally, and the reservation name just needs to match their own profile.

Does my family member need their own Marriott Bonvoy account?

Yes. Since the 2026 relaunch, verification attaches to each traveler’s own Bonvoy account, and they book the rate themselves on Marriott.com.

Do family members earn points on Explore Rate stays?

Yes. Stays earn Marriott Bonvoy points and elite night credits on the account of the person staying.
